JH Arts in the News

As "June in Jackson Heights" draws to a close, Council Member Daniel Dromm has invited local artist's to contribute art work to adorn his office in Manhattan at 250 Broadway in order to showcase the talent in his district. The Council Member is thrilled to acknowledge and celebrate the many talent artists, musicians and writers living in District 25. The first artist to show there is Carla Lobmier, who teaches art and creates works that have exhibited throughout New York.

Carla received a B.F.A. in Painting/Drawing from Eastern Illinois Un
iversity, supplemented with an Art History degree followed by an M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the University of Illinois. Currently, Carla, now living in Jackson Heights, has a piece in the large group show at NOVO Lounge (78-23 37th Avenue). Council Member Dromm is seen with Carla at the unveiling of her painting "August Picture" in the Manhattan office. Carla will also be hosting a salon and "Trunk Show" in Jackson Heights June 29, July 2 and 3 from 3pm to 10 pm. Her numerous art works will be on display and for sale. She has invited musicians to perform beginning at 7pm and filmmaker Jack Feldstein will be showing his short "neon animation" films too. For more information about attending the salon and show, please email: cjlobmier@gmail.com

The second annual “June in Jackson Heights” campaign, sponsored by Council Member Daniel Dromm, is in full swing with art shows, performances, films and historic tours. This year, 20 restaurants, representing a world of food, will again be offering specially priced menus for residents and visitors during the week-long event from Monday June 20th through Saturday June 25th.

Many Restaurants were happy to be included again this year and they are all on our website. Council Member Dromm’s outreach last year increased awareness of the international cuisine in the neighborhood and helped the sagging economy. Participating again is Colombian establishment Natives Restaurant (82-22 Northern Boulevard), with a Shell Salad filled with grilled chicken or shrimp or salmon and a glass of wine for only $15, in addition Consuelo Quintero has announced she has ample space for performances, parties, films and events in the revamped theatre and the upstairs lounge.

Also new this year are delicious entrees from Nepali at Mustang Thakali Kitchen (74-14 37th Ave) where a 10% discount off anything on the menu is available for the entire week and Desi Chinese newcomer Himalayan Hut (75-18 37th Ave) has a grand deal for two: same soup each, 1 special entrée with rice and tea for just $14.95.

In other parts of the world - such as Northern Boulevard and 31st Avenue in Jackson Heights - visit El Coyote (80-16 Northern Blvd) for Mexican done right at $20 for 3 courses or the delectable Greek neighbor Plaka (75-61 31st Ave) which offers a great menu with 20% off too!

Another special participant that we are celebrating is good ol’ Texas BBQ at Legends ( 71-04 35th Ave) with buy one get one free signature sandwiches of pulled pork and other tasty fare as well as their Traditional Tuesday Pasta Night – incredible Pasta dinner with dessert & coffee sweetened with a discount of 20% off the check.

THIS WEEK Jackson Heights in the News

THIS WEEK ! June in Jackson Heights
Consuelo from Natives on Northern Blvd - Sous Chef & Chef Depak from Delhi Heights on 37th Road & Council Member Dromm at the Press Conference

At a press conference on May 26, Councilmember Daniel Dromm announced the Second Annual June in Jackson Heights, an initiative designed to highlight the wealth of unique artistic talent, businesses and restaurants in the most diverse community in the world.

The month-long event will include art exhibits and installations, theatrical readings, family friendly activities, dance and musical performances and the Second Annual Jackson Heights Restaurant Week featuring international cuisine from June 20th through June 25th.

“After last year’s wildly successful debut, I am pleased to once again sponsor an initiative that showcases the broad range of arts and culture that make Jackson Heights such a unique neighborhood in which to live, work, eat, and shop,” Dromm said. “June in Jackson Heights is also a wonderful example of how arts and culture can be a driving force for economic development.”

Dromm added, “We are inviting everyone to visit the area in June to partake in the numerous events that are happening all around our neighborhood. You can take a guided tour highlighting the historic landmarked gardens, enjoy piano playing in front of our post office, or visit our library, one of the most used branches in all of New York, for free educational and cultural programs.”

Also, the 19th Annual Queens Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Parade and Multicultural Festival took place on June 5.

Of course it would not be June in Jackson Heights without another Restaurant Week. The event will start June 20 and run through June 25.

Also scheduled will be Play Me, I’m Yours, featuring 88 pianos placed in public areas in every borough. This endeavor, started by artist Luke Jerram and Sing for Hope, will return to Jackson Heights and will make a piano available for any member of the community to play through June 21. A concert in conjunction with Make Music NY will be held on June 21 in front of the Post Office at 78th Street and 37th Avenue.
